A young family in Kempston contacted SmartMist Air Conditioning after struggling through early-summer heat waves that were creating uncomfortable indoor temperatures. Their elderly dog, Milo, was especially affected, prompting the family to seek a fast, efficient, and pet-friendly cooling solution for their home.
We designed and installed a targeted multi-zone system that stabilised temperatures throughout the property, reduced energy consumption, and dramatically improved comfort for both the family and their heat-sensitive pet.
The challenge
The Harrison family contacted SmartMist Air Conditioning during an unusually warm June, concerned that their home was becoming increasingly uncomfortable - especially for their elderly dog, Milo, who is heat-sensitive and struggled during hot afternoons.
Their home, a two-storey detached property with uneven temperature distribution, consistently reached uncomfortable temperatures upstairs. Previous attempts using portable units had minimal effect and drove up energy bills. The family’s priority was consistent cooling throughout the house that was:
- Quiet (the existing dog becomes restless in noisy environments)

The Solution
After a thorough site visit and consultation, SmartMist recommended a multi-zone ductless mini-split system that would deliver tailored cooling to key living areas: the upstairs bedrooms and the open-plan living/dining room.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Three indoor units strategically placed to balance airflow and comfort
- Whisper-quiet operation to avoid startling Milo or interrupting family routines
- High SEER-rated equipment to optimise cooling performance and energy efficiency
- Smart thermostat control so the Harrisons could adjust zones individually via smartphone
- Protective covers and cable management to ensure pets couldn’t access units
Installation was completed over two days, with SmartMist’s team working around the family’s schedule to keep disruption minimal.
