Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Eligible homeowners can currently access grant support towards the cost of an air source heat pump installation.

SmartMist Renewables helps you access available funding for low-carbon heating and guides you through the process from first enquiry to installation.

Switching to renewable heating should feel like a positive step, not a confusing one.

For many homeowners and small businesses, the biggest barrier is not just the cost of a heat pump. It is understanding the grant process, knowing what support is available, finding the right certified installation route and making sure the paperwork is handled properly.

That is where SmartMist Renewables helps.

We look at the funding position from the start. We help you understand whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may apply, whether other financial support could be relevant, and how the grant process fits into your installation. You are not left trying to work through scheme rules, installer requirements or application steps on your own.

If you are ready to move away from gas, oil, LPG or electric heating, we can help make the route to renewable heating clearer, simpler and more affordable.

Up To £7,500 Towards Eligible Heat Pump Installations

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government-backed grant designed to help property owners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel or electric heating systems with low-carbon alternatives such as heat pumps.

For eligible installations, the scheme can currently provide:

  • £7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump
  • £7,500 towards a ground source or water source heat pump
  • £2,500 towards an eligible residential air-to-air heat pump
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler

The grant is normally applied as an upfront discount against your installation cost. That means, where you qualify, the grant is built into your quotation rather than leaving you to claim the money back afterwards.

For homes and small businesses currently heated by oil or LPG, the government has also announced enhanced support taking the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to £9,000 for eligible properties. This is particularly relevant for rural and off-gas properties where switching to renewable heating could offer a cleaner and more stable long-term solution.

All grants are subject to eligibility, scheme rules and approval.

We Help Take The Burden Out Of The Grant Process

A lot of companies mention the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. SmartMist Renewables goes further by making the funding conversation part of the whole project.

We help you understand what may be available, what information is needed, which installation route is required and how the grant affects the final cost.

Our support includes:

Grant eligibility guidance

We review your current heating system, property type, location and proposed renewable heating solution to help identify whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may apply.

Wider funding review

The BUS grant may be the main route, but it may not be the only financial benefit worth considering. Depending on your property and circumstances, we can also discuss other available support, VAT benefits, finance options or renewable energy measures that could strengthen the project.

Certified installation route

Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications must be handled through the correct certified route. SmartMist Renewables works with certified installation partners so your project is aligned with the scheme requirements from the outset.

Application support

The scheme is installer-led. Once you are happy to proceed, the application is handled through theinstaller route, with your consent required as part of the process. We help make sure you understandwhat is happening and what to expect.

Clear quotation

Where a grant applies, it should be shown clearly in your quotation, so you can see the cost of theinstallation after the grant has been deducted.

Installation and handover

Once approved, your renewable heating system is installed, commissioned and handed over properly, with guidance on how to use it efficiently.

A Funding-First Approach To Renewable Heating

The grant should not be treated as an afterthought.

With SmartMist Renewables, the funding route is considered early, before the project moves too farforward. That means you get a clearer understanding of affordability, suitability and next stepsbefore making a decision.

We believe customers need three things before committing to a heat pump:

Clarity on funding
You need to know what support may be available and how it affects the final cost.

Confidence in the system
A heat pump must be properly assessed, designed and installed for the property.

Support through the process
You should not be left to deal with grant rules, application steps and technical requirements alone.

This is what our service is built around.

Our Simple Process

1. Tell us about your property

We start with the basics: your postcode, property type, current heating system and what you are hoping to achieve.

2. We check the likely funding route

We look at whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may apply and whether any other support or savings could be relevant.

3. We arrange the right assessment

A proper survey helps confirm the most suitable renewable heating option, system size and installation requirements.

4. You receive a clear proposal

Your proposal sets out the recommended system, installation scope and any grant deduction that may apply.

5. The application is handled through the certified route

Once you are ready to proceed, the grant application is submitted through the correct installer-led process. You will be asked to provide consent when required.

6. Your system is installed and commissioned

The installation is completed, checked and handed over, with guidance on how to get the best from your new system.

Is Your Property Likely To Qualify?

Every property needs to be assessed individually, but you may be suitable for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme if:

  • your property is in England or Wales
  • you own the property
  • you are replacing gas, oil, LPG, coal or eligible electric heating
  • the new system is an eligible heat pump or biomass boiler
  • the installation is completed through the correct certified route
  • the system is designed to meet the heating needs of the property

Most new-build homes are not eligible, although self-build properties may qualify in certain circumstances. The grant is also not normally available where you are replacing an existing low carbon heating system.

The rules can change, so we will check the current position with you before advising on the next step.

What About EPCs?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules changed in April 2026. A valid Energy Performance Certificate is no longer an absolute requirement for applications made under the updated guidance, although information from an existing EPC may still be useful and evidence may still be required in some cases.

This is a good example of why proper guidance matters. Grant rules change, online information becomes outdated, and customers can easily be left unsure about what is actually required.

SmartMist Renewables helps you work from the current position, not old assumptions.

More Than A Grant Application

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can make a major difference to the upfront cost of a heat pump, but the grant is only one part of the decision.

A successful renewable heating project also depends on:

  • choosing the right system for the property
  • assessing insulation and heat demand
  • understanding hot water requirements
  • checking installation practicalities
  • using the correct certified route
  • receiving clear handover and aftercare
  • knowing how to run the system efficiently

SmartMist Renewables helps bring these pieces together.

We are not here simply to point you towards a grant. We are here to help you move through the process properly, from first enquiry to installed system.

Customer FAQs

Can I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme myself?

The scheme is installer-led, so the application is normally made by the installer on your behalf. You will still need to provide consent and may need to supply information, but you should not have to manage the full application alone.

Is the grant paid directly to me?

Usually, no. Where you qualify, the grant is normally applied as an upfront discount against your installation cost.

How much is the heat pump grant

Eligible air-to-water, ground source and water source heat pump installations can currently receive up to £7,500. Eligible residential air-to-air heat pumps can receive £2,500. Biomass boilers can receive £5,000 in eligible circumstances.

Is there extra support for oil or LPG properties?

The government has announced enhanced support of £9,000 for eligible properties currently heated by oil or LPG. This is aimed particularly at households and small businesses in England and Wales affected by higher off-gas heating costs.

Do I need an MCS-certified installer?

Yes. Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications must be handled through the correct certified installer route.

Do I need an EPC?

The EPC rules changed in April 2026. A valid EPC is no longer an absolute requirement for updated BUS applications, although existing EPC information may still be useful and evidence may still be needed in some cases.

Are new-build homes eligible?

Most new-build homes are not eligible, although self-build properties may qualify in certain circumstances.

Can SmartMist Renewables check other financial help too?

Yes. We can help you consider the Boiler Upgrade Scheme alongside other possible support, VAT benefits, finance options and renewable energy measures where relevant.
